Maurice Ravel – Miami – Law Firm

Tal día como hoy murió Maurice Ravel, y no es ninguna inocentada, os lo puedo asegurar. Sucedió en 1937, tras cuatro años de dura enfermedad.

Disfrutó de una infancia feliz. Sus padres se movieron en un entorno cultural propicio para despertar en el joven Ravel un talento musical impresionante.

Ravel manifestó un firme carácter y una independencia musical muy personal. Siempre se desmarcó de las comparaciones musicales con Debussy, compositor al que admiró y respetó. Ravel nunca quiso ser "etiquetado".

Tras una época de fracasos y éxitos alternados, y una vez pasada la Primera Guerra Mundial, se consolidó como el gran compositor francés "vivo" de su época, despertando admiración allá por donde pisaba.

Se convirtió en la referencia para una generación de jóvenes compositores franceses, y emprendió giras por Estados Unidos y Canadá. Fue en América donde pudo disfrutar del jazz y conocer al joven compositor George Gerswhin.

Su obra más interpretada es sin duda "Bolero", un encargo de la bailarina Ida Rubinstein que dura unos 15 minutos aproximadamente. En esta obra sólo se oyen dos temas musicales sobradamente conocidos.
Según el mismo Ravel, se trataba de un experimento musical que consistía en hacer un gran crescendo (aumentar el volumen sonoro) orquestal a través de todos sus instrumentos, jugando con la dimensión tímbrica.

Cabe destacar también su pericia como orquestador. Su obra maestra en este terreno es la orquestación de "Cuadros de una Exposición" del compositor ruso Modest Moussorgsky. Ravel era capaz a través de la orquestación de dar una nueva dimensión a obras originalmente escritas para piano.

El final de su vida estuvo tristemente marcado por la enfermedad. Una enfermedad neurológica le produjo desórdenes en la escritura, el lenguaje y la motricidad, aunque su inteligencia seguía intacta, y por tanto podía seguir pensando en música, que era incapaz de escribir, tocar o cantar.

Fue esto sin duda alguna una de sus mayores frustraciones. Su lucidez musical estaba encerrada en un cuerpo inutilizado por la enfermedad, y por la incapacidad de un cuerpo incapaz de moverse o de expresar sensación alguna.
